FOXTON MEETING.

ONE WHETU WINS CUP. TRAINER’S "“HAT -TRICK.” RED MANFRED’S PERFORMANCE With beautiful weather favouring the fixture, there was a very large crowd in attendance for the Foxton Racing Club’s winter -meeting on Saturday, when conditions were ideal. The track was in good order, and the going firm. The totalisator handled £11,770 10s compared with £7147 for the corresponding fixture of last year, an increase of £4623 10s. Large fields raced in some of the events, the number of starters in two being close enough to the limit to have created a division if there had not been some scratchings. A feature of the racing was that it opened with a succession of wins for the Hawera trainer, J. Fryer, whose horses annexed the first three events, a very unusual occurrence. Red Manfred, from this stable, after winning the Hurdles in liis first start over fences, finished a good second in the seven furlongs Kebbell Memorial, while Royal Fire secured a third place in the* hack steeplechase for tlie same mentor, who had a good innings. The Foxton Cup was won by the favourite One Whetu, who scored after a long run of bad luck. VADANOE BREAKS MAIDEN STATUS. Carrying twice as much support as any otner horse in the race, the Vaals two-year-old Vadanoe, ail expected, improved upon his minor placing's at Woodville (where he finished second to Captain Eurst) and at Egmont to win the .Trial Stakes in good style. Two withdrawals left nineteen runners, obviating the necessity for a division. There was some trouble in despatching the large field, Aria playing up, but when the tapes werq_ lifted the 6peedy Hunting Song filly began smartly as usual and had charge for the first furlong, where she was displaced by Malibu, the other early leaders being Gala, Vadanoe and River Feale. Aria soon regained the lead and was in front turning into the straight, with Vadanoe, Malibu, and Lady Zona handy. Vadanoe then put* in his claim and went on to win nicely from Malibu, who made a surprisingly good showing, while Aria hung on for third place. Silent Acre, who had his Foxton supporters, ran a good race into fifth place behind the second favourite, Lady Zona, with Master Hector, Aurora’s Love and River Feale next. Royal Choice, who was being produced in his first race, ran well, but after being close up at the foot of the straight the Laughing Prince gelding faded. He will be improved by the race. WINS AT FIRST START. Red Manfred, who had disappointed on the flat since returning to racing at Woodville after a lengthy 6pell, scored an impressive victory in the Poroutawhao Hurdles, winning at his first start over fences, and enabling the Hawera mentor, J. Fryer to lead in his second winner. Ethiop hung on better than formerly, but though the pair had the finish to themselves, he had no chance with Red Manfred, who like other recruits who had done well on the flat, appears to have a good future as a jumper. Ethiop led out from King Tliomond, Beau Gallante, Contact, and Iddo, the field flattening out the second hurdle, and leaving no final jump there for the second round. Iddo, who was not jumping as well as usual, and was rapping his fences hard, had charge through the straight the first time and until five furlongs from home, with King Thomond and Beau Gallante handy. King Thomond fell on tho flat, interfering with Red Sun, and at the half-mile the favourite, Contact, jumped to the front from Iddo, who had dropped back to fifth at the straight entrance, where Red Manfred, who had moved up fast, went to the frbnt from Contact, Ethiop, and Beau Gallante. Contact could not quite see it out and Red Manfred, with a straight run to the post, scored well from Ethiop. Beau Gallante, who had always been prominent, and should go better next start, was fourth, with the disappointing Iddo next. Little was seen of Taumau and Red Sun, the topweight.

ONE WHETU REPRODUCES DASH

Returning to winning form after a long sequence of minor placings, One Whetu did what would have been a good Cornwall Cup trial, had he remained in the northern event, by coming with a. fast sprint on the turn in the Foxton Cup to collar Royal Banquet at the distance and win by halt a length. It was a popular win and the Sandstar gelding, who had been established a firm favourite, gave J. Fryer the “hat” trick. Royal Banquet, a jumper, though beaten into specond place, made a great race of it in this company, and after having been an early pacemaker, with Rona Bay, hung on gamely in a fighting finish. Rona Bay led from the jump-out, being attended by Royal Banquet, Davistoek, Gay Boy and One Whetu. Windsoreen was taken up fast to the front through the straight the first time, but Rona Bay soon regained the lead, Windsoreen eventually finishing a bad last. Rona Bay held the lead from Royal Banquet, Davistoek, One Whetu and Gay Boy across the top and to the turn, where One Whetu, reproducing his old-time dash, began to unwind a characteristic finishing run, to head off Royal Banquet up tne straight, with Pukeko, who had made a late dab, in third place. Lapel went a surprisingly good race into fourth place, Davistoek finishing next. Rona Bay dropped right out of the picture when the pressure was applied and Gay Boy, who was evidently not in liis best, galloping mood, was always in the middle of the field. SPEEDY GOLDEN CHEST.

Following up her win at Manawatu and her second in the Waitohu Haclc at Otaki, Golden Chest, who was always well placed, Scored on her home track in the Himatangi Hack Handicap after holding off a strong challenge by the topweight, Airing. Royal Record had' his sequence of successes Broken and Marjory Daw, another winner at Otaki, also failed. Dawning Light, though first out of the barrier, lacked racing condition, and after throe furlongs had been covered, began to drop back badly, being near the end of the field of fourteen at the finish. Sporting Gift soon took charge and three furlongs from home was in front of Eara, Airing, Dawning Light find Golden Chest, but dropped back once the straight was reached. Eara and Airing were challenged by Golden Chest at the distance and the Foxton mare finished strongly to beat Airing by half a length, with Eara, who had threatened danger just before the straight entrance, another one and a-half lengths back. Royal Record finished on well in fourth place, the distance being a furlong shorter than that i to which he is accustomed. Diamond Cutter was fifthwith Gladium and'Sporting Gift next.

PETRARCH’S POPULAR WIN, P-etrarch, who had looked a likely winner at Egmont when he ran off the course five furlongs from home, showed the benefit of his recent racing by winning the Whirokino Hack and Hunters Steeplechase in good 6tyle. He took the lead towards the end of the first circuit, and had a jumping duel with Croydeu at practically every fence in the secourl round. Platter, the outsider of the field, who had shown aptitude in his schooling displays since he was acquired recently by Mr F. W. Davis, of Woodville,' gave a very sound display for a novice steeplechaser, and was right up with Petrarch at the last fence but, once over after a faulty jump, the winner drew away again. Croydeu, Otauru King, Petrarch and Platter were first out, and Croydeu and Platter were together over the brush double in the straight the first time. Petnaj-ch drew level with the Warplan© mare crossing the top and they led Platter, Battleground and Royal Fire to the turn. Royal Fire, who shaped like an early winner, looked like taking second place when he moved up at the straight entrance, but tired again into third place live lengths back. Croydeu and Rioghail were next. FOURTH ON END. Recording his fourth win on end, Reipar, who had not raced since he won at the Stratford meeting in the autumn after his double success at Trentham, was responsible for a solid performance in winning the Kebbell Memorial Handicap, in which he had the benefit of 51b allowance for liis apprentice rider. Jumping out smartly, .the Greyspear gelding led from end to end, and stalled off determined challenges in the straight by Red Manfred and Gobi Mission. Red Manfred, who had earlief won the Hurdles, is evidently back to his best form again, for he was finishing on very strongly in second place after having made a fast run just before reaching the straight Essex, the Great Northern Derby winner, did not start. Reipar, Sir Nigel (the favourite), Passion Fruit, Hunting Lodge and High Test were the early leaders. Reipar increased his lead slightly before the turn, attending him being Hunting Lodge, Sir Nigel and Gold Mission, with Red Manfred coming fast. Reipar held on to win by a length, Red Manfred being a head next from Gold Mission. YOUSSIPOFE FINISHES FAST.

Finishing with a very fast run to score easily by two lengths, the Tren-tham-trained Youssipoft was too good for the opposition iu the Moutoa Hack Handicap. Lett badly at the start, as had been the case at Otaki, The Sandwich Man was again the unluckiest horse. After standing the field a good start the Shambles gelding was going like a train into the back, was in seventh place at the turn, and came very fast up the straight, but was too far hack to get a place. The favourite, Rotoma. was always well placed, and went a good race fo r second Jerry ran a moderately good race for third, a head behind Rotoma, and Parakino, after being prominent all the way, finished fourth in the field of fifteen runners. War Lap and Erebus, who led into the straight, dropped back in the finishing stages, as the field came up practically in a line, at the distance. RACING IN DETAIL.
