EXCITING CHASE.

INCIDENT AT LANSDOWNE. MASTERTON, April 29. An exciting man-hunt took place at Lansdow'ne this afternoon, when a large number of residents assisted the police in running down an alleged house-breaker after a chase through a plantation of thick- native bush, through swamp and over high fences. The man will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow with breaking and entering a house in Rimu Street with intention to commit a crime The occupant was resting in her bedroom when she heard footsteps outside in the passage, and through the door she saw a man who, on being sighted,, made a hasty departure, hiding his face in his hands. The occupant rushed out on the veranda as the man was making off down the road, and called out to people in the street. A large number of people gath-, ered, and Constables C. Reardon and R. Hollis were soon on the scene. By this time, however the man was out of sight, as he had sought the cover of Mr Ilugli Wiliams’s seven-acre native bush plantation in Totara Street. A considerable time elapsed without any sign of the man, but eventually the searchers saw the crouching figure of a man. From that time the hunt was on in earnest, for in making a bold bid for liberty tho man scaled three high fences and ploughed his way through swamp and scrub with Constable Reardon on his trail. He was overtaken and placed under arrest.
