CANCER RESEARCH.

WORK IN AUSTRALIA. AUCKLAND, April 28. A special report on the progress being made in cancer research and other medical problems in Australia is to be presented to the Auckland Hospital Board by Dr. J. W. Craven, superintendent of the Auckland Hospital Board, who has returned from Australia. Dr. Craven attended the Australian cancer conference at Canberra from April 13 to April 16, and visited hospitals both ill Sydney and Melbourne on behalf of the Auckland board. “Australia is tackling the cancer problem seriously,” ho said, “and is doing good work.” Most of tho reports made to tho conference wero of a very technical kind, he said, and there was nothing of a sensational news nature revealed. It was evident, however, that a. great deal of progress had been made. He worild be dealing with that subject, he said,' in his report to the board, and until then he did not wish to go into the matter deeply. Dr. P. Clennell Fenwick and Professor D’Ath had also been present from New Zealand, and they would bo assisting in tho preparation of reports that would be helpful to the New Zealand cancer workers. Statistics and reports which Dr. Craven had brought back with him from the conference would be of benefit to the cancer committee of the Auckland Hospital. HOSPITAL PROGRESS. Referring to his visits to Melbourne and Sydney, Dr. Craven said that tremendous progress had _ been made in the hospitals of those cities, with their huge populations. He had visited 14 hospitals in all in the two cities, and found them all interesting and instructive. Not all of them were publicly maintained; some of them relied upon voluntary contributions, and some upon the State lotteries, and they included community hospitals, and what were called charity hospitals.
