One of the most interesting functions ever held by the All Saints’ Men’s Club took place on Wednesday. Roy. W. Langston, acting-president, was in the chair and introduced the principal speaker for the evening, Mr J. H. Stevens. Showing a deep knowledge of liis subject, “The Maori,” the speaker held the keen attention of a large gathering of ladies a.nd gentlemen. Native flora, plant life, customs and historical documents wore introduced during tlie address, which proved most interesting and educational. In harmony with the programme, which was described ns “A Maori Evening,” was a talk by Mr J. Wright. This gentleman gave the gathering some expert information on the intricacies of tribal scroll work as painted on tho rafters of tlie leading Maori meeting-houses. The speaker stressed the fact that the beauty of design lay not in stencilling, but rather in allowing the artistic to develop by the free-ha.nd touch. Some specimens of work were on- view, also an interesting souvenir booklet of the opening of the Waitara meetinghouse, sponsored by Hon. Sir A. T. Ngata. Appropriate Maori entertainment was provided during the evening by Mr and Mrs Ward and their daughter of Awahuri, and was grea.tlv enjoyed.-The stewards were Messrs C. C. Aikman and H. Ashworth.
