TAHIATUA, April" 29. , Mr C. B. Tylcc has donated £1 for the best pen of hoggets, woolly or shorn, in the annual Romney hogget competition held under the auspices of the I’ahiatua branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. When a motor-ear m which Messrs A. I’ratt and S. Hodge were returning from Kaitawa met a lorry driven by Mr J. Daysh on a corner it ran over the bank to avoid a collision. No one was injured and the car, which was slightly damaged, was returned to the road through an adjoining paddock. A call to a fire at Hie residence of .Mr V. Levy, in Queen Street, was received hv the i’ahiatua Fire Brigade at 5.40 this morning. The dailies were confined to the back of the house, tho damage being done in tho kitchen, pantry and dining-room. The brigade was forced to u t a pump in an endeavour to boost 'the water supply.The owner is at present in Wellington. At the Pahiatun Fire Board meeting, held yesterday afternoon, it; was agreed to donate £5 towards the King Gtorgo V memorial fund. An appreciation of Mr W. A. Barton’s services to tho Fire Board was placed on record. I’hiis was the outcome of a decision on the part of Mr Barton not to seek re-election as an insurance company representative on tho board.

At a meeting of parishioners of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, the vicar (Itcv. H. Wilson) made reference to the necessity for the retention of '.lie old school building at 'Jane for holding church and Sunday school services, mentioning that the Education Board had previously called tendons for the purchase of it. The vicar reported that lie had written to the Minister of Education regarding the matter, asking that the building be kept for these purposes. The Minister had replied intimating that the building would still be available for church and social purposes if a responsible eoiiiinitttc took over tho control of it. Rev. IT. Wilson, 8.A., vicar of St. Peter’s Anglican- Church, presided over the annual meeting ot parishioners, last evening. Tho vicar gave the following resume of" the activities of the year, figures in parentheses being those tor last year:— Number of baptisms, 45 (41); deaths, 14, (23); marriages, 14 (16); communicants on Easter Bay, 130 (150); Christmas Day, 142 (149) ; town church households in the parish 196 (173);. country households, 174 (154); a total of 370 (327). Mr Wilson eulogised the following for their work in connection with the Church.;—The vestry, Messrs Tattle, G. W. Chatwin, Hamilton, G. Godfrey Taylor, J. W. Walton and 11. A. Biek, Miss Chatwin, and Messrs Haines, Wills and Mrs Kelsey. Various reports, which showed a gratifying state m the church’s activities, wore adopted. In view of the golden jubilee of the holding of the Anglican Church services in Pahiatua occurring in 1933, the vestry was recommended to pursue inquiries nnent saino and formulate arrangements for a suitable celebration. The vicar paid a tribute to Mr V. J. Scott for his loyal and faithful service the previous year us vicar’s warden, also eulogising the efforts of Mr A. W. Hamilton, who had worked so liaid for the church as people’s warden during a time of stress.

Mr and Mrs W. C. Vincent are at present visiting 'Mr and Mrs A. W. White. Mr Vincent was at one time proprietor of tho Pahiatua cordial factory. The green and gold ball was held at Mangamutu last evening, when visitors from all parts of the district were present. ’The now decorative scheme was a revelation. the hall being transfosincd into a myriad of snowflake effects, while the effective use of green and gold streamers added to tho attractiveness of the scene. An exhibition of the modern waltz, a ballroom slow fox-trot, was given by Mr and Mrs Southern Colledgc, of Wellington. Tho fox-trot championship (the prizes for which was two handsome silver cups) attracted a large entry and resulted in a win for Mr R. Hawkins, of Dannevirke, and Miss T Edmonds, of Palmerston North. Mr aiid Mrs Southern Colledgc acted as judges. Extras were contribotcd by Miss L. White. Mr D. O’Brien was the M.G.
