ORANGE SHORTAGE.

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, April 11 A statement to the effect that the Government is closely watching the position in respect to shortages ot oranges in the Dominion was made by the Minister or Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) to-day. He said that the present shortage was due to the curtailment of purchases ot California fruit due to the exceptionally high cost hrought about by a crop shortage in the United States following the disastrous season there, and, secondly, to the late maturity of the Fijian oranges and mandarins. Apart from the small shipment expected shortly from Papeete no relief can be expected to the present shortage until the Monterey arrives from Los Angeles on April 16.
