INFANTILE PARALYSIS

FIRST CASE IN THE CITY. ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL. A positive case of infantile paralysis from within the city boundary was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital last evening. The patient is a girl, two years of age, and she is suffering from slight paralysis of the left leg. The affection is regarded as being very mild. With the admission last evening, the first from within the city, the number of positive cases in the Hospital numbers nine. CASE AT HASTINGS. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, April 9. A further case of infantile paralysis was admitted to the Napier Hospital last night from Hastings, this being the second case within 24 hours. Prior to these cases there had been a break of over 10 days, during which the toivn was free of any further outbreaks.

The schools in Hastings will not reopen on Monday, owing to these two latest cases, which have been definitely diagnosed as positive. The latest victim, admitted last evening, is a 14-vear-old girl, a pupil of the Hastings Central School. TARANAKI SUSPECTS. Per Press Association. HAWERA, April 9. Following the admission to hospital of two further infantile paralysis suspects, the Manaia School, the Manaia Convent School and the Otakeho School have been closed until further notice. EAST COAST CASES. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, April 9. Three new cases of infantile paralysis were reported to the headquarters of the East Cape health district to-day, all the patients being Maori children. Two of the cases come from Wailiau Bay. in the Bay of Plenty, and the other from Te Whaiti, in the Urewera. CASES IN WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 9. Two cases of infantile paralysis are reported from Newtown, one a girl of 5 attending the Newtown School and the other a girl of 16. The discovery of the first case resulted in the Newtown School, one of the largest Wellington schools, being closed down immediately till further notice. The school in Berhampore, a nearby suburb, with 400 pupils, was already closed.
