FALSE DECLARATIONS.

FINE AT DUNEDIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 9. It will be some years before John lteid is allowed ,to forget that lie made a number of false declarations under the Employment Act. He pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to five charges under the Act. Chief Detective Young, who prosecuted, said that defendant was, on relief work. He had made eight false declarations, but was being charged in respect of only five offences. He failed to disclose that his wife was working. Slit had been in regular employment since December. “Defendant received relief amounting to £9B 17s in excess of what he would have got if he had made a truthful statement,” said Chief Detective Young. Mr O. G. Stevens, who appeared for defendant, said that there were some anomalies in connection with this case and asked the Magistrate to take that fact into consideration. He added that lteid was an Imperial soldier and had been a member of the Cameron Highlanders for 20 years. He had been offered work for three hours a week.

Commenting that the amount involved was substantial, the Magistrate, Mr H- AV. Bundle, fined Reid £2O and costs on each of the four charges, the sum to be paid at the rate of 5s a week. He was convicted only on the fifth charge.
