AUCKLAND CARNIVAL. MANAWATU SUCCESS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 29. One Australian and New Zealand record and two New Zealand records were established by the champion competitors in the inter-provincial swimming carnival at the tepid baths tonight. In a great 220 yards race Miss Islay Purdie (Otago) beat Miss N. Ludlow (Auckland) in 2miu. 40sec., breaking the record of Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland) by six seconds. Miss Ludlow registered 2min. 41sec. in a special attack on her own New Zealand time in the 200 metres backstroke. P. E. Mathieson, who on Saturday bettered the Australian and New Zealand record for 400 metres by G 3-ssoc., taking smin. 35see., succeeded in registering 2min. 37sec., which is an improvement of 6 4-ssec. on the record. He also eclipsed the Australian time of 2 min. 43sec.
P. Hanan (Auckland), winner of 110 yards free style scratch race, took 60 4-ssoc. or l-ssec. faster than R. B. Fra.nkham’s record for 100 metres. Frankham was second, beaten by a foot. Miss Purdie won the 50 yards ladies' race in 29 4-5 seconds and Mathieson the 150 yards backstroke in 1 minute 44 2-5 seconds. The result of the 440 yards men’s freestyle was: R. Simons (Manawatu) 1, P. Hanan (Auckland) 2, F. Pennington (Wellington) 3. Time, 5 minutes 25 4-5 seconds.
