CLAY BIRD CHAMPIONSHIP. The West Coast (North Island) clay bird shooting tournament conducted by the Palmerston North Gun Club was concluded at the Fitzherbert ground yesterday, the West Coast championship being won by J. Malcolm (Hunterville). The first match of the day was of 5 birds, sixteen competitors obtaining the possible and dividing the stakes. This was followed by the £IOO handicap of 21 birds. L. Maher (Putaruru), W. A. Thomson (Kairanga), and J. Ozanne (Taumarunui), each 21 divided the first, second and third prizes. Fourth and fifth prizes were divided by R. Meyer (Ohingaiti), E. Groome (Otane). C. Benton (Taranaki), R. Oates (Tokomaru Bay) and C. P. Webber (Wairarapa). The West Coast (North Island) championship was won by J. Malcolm (Hunterville) with the possible of 21. R. Maher (Ohingaiti) 20 and W. A. Thomson (Kairanga) 20 tied for second place, and in the shoot off Maher was successful-

No. 1 10 bird sweepstake was divided by E. Farmer (Glen Oroua), J. Dobson ( Hamilton), C. P. Webber (Masterton), J. Winiki (New Plymouth), R, IC. Cuthbertson (Wanganui), C. Benton (Taranaki), M. Ivearins (Kairanga) and J, Dunlop (Auckland).

The double-rise match was won by M. Hunter (Wanganui) with 9 breaks out of 10. W. Oates (Tokomaru Bay) was second with 8, and minor prizes went to C. P. Webber (Masterton), .TWiniki (New Plymouth), D. Papworth (Taumarunui), and G. Mills (Hastings). The second double-rise matcb was won by J. Winiki (New Plymouth) with the possible of 10. Second prize went to R. Anderson (Taihape). with 9. R. Maher (Ohingaiti). W. Sharpe (Wairarapa), R. Oates (Tokomaru Bay), and J. Mills (Hastings), each with 8 breaks, divided the lesser prizes. Tributes were paid to the shooting of Messrs Maher Bros., who liave only been engaged in this branch of the sport for 18 months. It was considered that their marksmanship pointed to them as coming champions.
