WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AWAHURI BRANCH. The fifth annual meeting of the Awahuri Women’s Institute was well attended and was presided over by Mrs E. 0. Bond, who extended a welcome to all. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs C. Thompson, Mrs Oyer, and Mrs .Man.son. Betters of thanks were received from Mrs Wilson and lan Bennett, and also letters of congratulation on the success of the recent flower show from Mr H. Haythorne and Mesdames Flowers and Currie. Mesdames Bond and Campbell were appointed delegates to the council meeting. The annual report was the)) given by Mies Matthews:— “A successful year has been completed. The membership is 50. A new group was formed known as Awatea. In September we were very sad to report the death of one of our much loved members, Mrs Nutt. Donations were sent to the Health Stamp Campaign IBs Dominion Federation £l, North Wellington Federation £l, parcels to the Leper station and blind children on their birthdays, and Christmas gifts to the Nutt children.” The treasurer’s report showed an increase and a good credit balance to start the year off. Mrs Bond in her presidential address spoke very highly of the secretary’s and treasurer’s work (Miss Matthews and Mrs Nicholson) and also thanked all members for their splendid co-operation, also the press and any who had assisted during the year. It was decided to return the sixteen nominations as the committee. Mrs Bond was re-elected unopposed as president, also Miss Matthews as secretary and Mrs Nicholson as treasurer. Mrs Goodman is i’ress correspondent, and Mesdames Goodman and Rowlands are vice-pre-sidents. A special donation is to be made to the conference debit fund of £l. it was also decided to buy some bulbs and seeds and distribute them to the members. The potato competition for quality as well as quantity was won by Mrs. C. Thompson. Mesdames Ward and Haythorne were in charge of the sale of potatoes. It was decided to make up a programme for six months, and each month to have a flower competition and also a cooking and sewing one alternately. For April it will be a three-minute sponge, jam filling, no icing. The stewards arc Miss Henson and Mrs Christian and for flowers Miss Pearce. The stall stewards are Miss 0. Flarrell and Mrs Terry. A small presentation was made to Misses Bennett and Henderson for tidying up the hall each month. A roll call, suggestions for this year’s programme, brought forth many and varied ideas. Correspondence from the Dominion Federation regarding donations to outside organisations was read and discussed. A demonstration on hairpin work can be arranged for next month.
