FEILDING’S SUCCESS.

BIG TOTALISATOR INCREASE. TAI TOR U TAKES* M AIX EVENT. (Rv “Aloturon.”) The Eeilding Jockey Club’s luck held good I'or the concluding day of the meeting yesterday and the week-end’s rain cleared away in the forenoon to remain fine until the last race. Naturally the course was well soaked after the rain the night before, hut the going was really good under the circumstances and all through the day the racing was most interesting. Taitoru, who appeared to have been rather unwisely ridden in the Eeilding (.'up, made amends in the Easter Handicap in which he once more attended to most of the pacemaking. Shaking off his nearest attendants, Waipiro and Jubilee Song, half a mile from home, he was then carried along by Lapel, while Royal Secret and Davistock, who had always been prominent, ; were closest to him entering the straight. With the issue in dispute in earnest Taitoru drew right out to win handsomely from Lapel, while Royal Secret just hung on for third money from Spiral, who had made a promising run on the home turn. The favourite One Whetu was again sore | and had too much ground to make up | in the crucial stages to offer any seri-. ! ous opposition. Taitoru, who is one of j the most consistent horses racing, scored a very popular win. FINE RACE FOR HACK CUP. A splendidly matched field lined up for the Oroua Hack (.'up in which scarcely any one of the nine starters could have ils chances entirely discounted. Naturally it was a fine betting race with the public placing most faith in (he Feildinp-trained Brazen King (£679 10s), while tho Wellington winner Wananga (£516 10s) was almost as well backed, good support coming also for Sanhedrin (£607). Catalogue (£589) and -Maestro (£564 10s). The five horse* tilled the first five plaeings. Vonia Park, from the rails, made the first move, being attended through lire straight by Happy Hunting, War Lap, Catalogue and Sanhedrim, with Wananga also close up. Vonia Park had a clear lead of two lengths. at the six furlongs, and down the back stretch tie was attended by Happy Hunting and War Lap, who wore presently joined by Wananga. There appeared to be a little crowding at the half-mile, where Scooter dropped right out and Catalogue drifted back to Brazen King at the tail of tho then hunching field. Maestro then made a fast run around tho hunch and turning for home Vonia Park, Happy Hunting, War Lap, Wananga, and Maestro were abreast. Tho pacemakers succumbed under pressure, leaving Sanhedrim and Maestro temporarily in charge, but Catalogue swung around them to take up tho running with Brazen King in hot pursuit. Try as lie tlid Brazen King could make no impression on Catalogue, who has not been out of the money since he recommenced racing. He won easily and Brazen King ns comfortably accounted for Sanhedrim and Maestro. Wananga struggled home next from War Lap and Happy Hunting. PRESENTATION OF CUP.

The president of the club (Mr W. G. Fry) expressed pleasure in presenting the cup to Mr E. L. Barnes. All would agree,

he said, that Catalogue had put up a fine performance and had earned his victory in a well-run race. Tho club’s policy of putting on a good race for hacks had been proved a wise one and the best mid-dle-distance horses for that class had lined up to make a field which provided a contest worth going a long way to witness. Every candidate had played its part d in making the event interesting, and tho e success of Catalogue had been deserving s of a consistent horse and owner. He 0 hoped that the trophy would bring Mr ._ Barnes many happy recollections of tho ~ day and the' event. 0 Air Barnes, in thanking the president for his congratulations, gave unstinting praise to Mrs Alan McDonald for her preparation of the horse for this autumn's racing. The jockey (S. Wilson), n he said, was deserving of praise for his K capable riding and fine finish on the '■ horse. J Mr Fry then presented miniature cups to the trainer and jockey and cheers were given o for the owner and Mrs Barnes, and the n trainer and jockey. v There wore no incidents that called for - more than tho passing attention of the , acting-stipendiary steward (Mr Lisle Alit derton) and tho only untoward incident of 1 the day was the injury caused to Mr F. 0 Ormond's smart colt Karl, who wrenched e a suspensory ligament while contesting the | Denbigh Handicap. Tho smooth running of the meeting was , a tribute to the organisation of the sec- ' retary (Mr E. G. Goodbeliere), with Mr L W. G Fry (president) attending to the 1 social side of tho gathering. The handi- ” capper (Mr E. V. Wilson) made his as- ‘ sessments well, only one favourite during < tho day being successful. The judge (Miff. P. Russell) and the starter (Mr W. G. Price) executed their duties in good > style. The New Plymouth horseman, L. 11. 1 Clifford, was in fine form, winning on . Flying Chief, Racecall, Gaily, attd lnleri national (the only double winner at the ; meeting), and running third on Sanhed- , tin, his only other mount being One l Whetu, who finished fifth in the Easter , Handicap. i The gates and books showed a small t increase on the second day of hist year, t while tho totalisator staff were again kept busy, the turnover being £25,397 10s, ! compared with £21,927 last year, an mt crease of £3470 10s. For the meeting , £52,648 passed through the machine eomi pared with £42,134 10s last year, art in- ■ crease of £10,513 10s. , Descriptions of events after the first • edition went to press yesterday are as fol- , low: RACECALL AT LAST. ’ A long run of seconds was broken when 1 Racecall landed the Waiata Stakes scori ing a very popular win. As usual, he was 1 allowed to make most of tho running, and, , once into the straight, drew out for an easy win. Ohanga looked a trifle unlucky, although ho would not have troubled tho winner. He was again slow to find his feet, and was asked to make up his ground on the turn, where Gay Ruby appeared to get on to the heels of Serviette and nearly came down. Golden Enterprise ran a solid race, but Aurora’s Love did not finish as welt jts was expected after being prominent " all the wav. BLACK THREAD WINS. The Gisborne trained hack, Black Thread, upset plans when ho landed home a winner in tho Denbigh Handicap, hut the odds-oti favourite, Dungarvan, watt distinctly unlucky. However, the honours were with Black Thread, who made all the running. Karl broke down two furlongs from homo and nearly brought down Dungarvan, who had been slow to begin and was making up ground rapidly. Ben Braggio could not handle the heavy going. GAILY WINS NICELY. The Siegfried filly Gaily, who created a favourable impression by finishing on into third place behind Geira and Aureus on the opening day, showed expected improvement to win the Awaliuri Nursery Handicap convincingly. She was always well placed and when the pacemaker Greenwich collapsed at the foot of tho straight she shot through past t;ho Ptalrnorstonowned (illy ami won going away. Gay Marionette, who ran on well the first da\', did well to get near the leaders on the turn after drawing tho outside of the field, and she finished too solidly for Greenwich, who had been several lengths clear on the turn. If anything was unlucky it was Scarf Dance. She began well, but was sent hack in tho first furlong and was second to last into tho straight. Sho finished resolutely into fourth place ahead of Notice (who also finished fast) and Settlement. CATALOGUE’S HACK CUP. Tho reward of consistency came the way of tho Awapuni representative Catalogue in the Oroua Hack Clip ' and the topweight, shouldering his 9.5 like the class horse ho is, carried off all the honours n« described above. INTERNATIONAL AGAIN. With a run similar to that ho produced on tho opening day the smart throe-year-old International was not to bo denied when tho whips wore flying at the distance in the Makino Handicup, at which stage of tho race Airing, Great Hope, International, and Lady Ina wore lined across the courso. Lady Ina ran a great race to push International to a head, for her rider was slightly cramped over tho last fifty yards. Her effort was' genuine and draws attention to her prosjjects in races of this description in the near future. Airing was a most creditable third, after appearing to have tho race won when he wrested the lead from Great Hope below the distance. The latter, who was having his first race past six furlongs, gamely tried to load all tho way and went down fighting. It was his first raco since early in February and he may have boon just short of the gallop. Aussie Ra was prominent early in second position, but retired beaten iwi* furlongs from home.
