TERRACE END VIEWS.

A BRIEF DISCUSSION. Reference was made to the impending poll, on the proposal for the extension of the Tiritea water supply undertaking, at last evening’s meeting of the Terrace End Progressive Association, when the chairman (Mr F. J. Oakley) read a letter to the editor from Mr J. T. J. Heatley, which appeared in the “Manawatu Evening Standard” yesterday. The chairman remarked that the sum proposed was a tremendous amount of money, and he thought that there was no doubt there had been a lot of “tinkering” with the Tiritea scheme. Some years ago the ratepay-ers-had been asked to sanction a Joan of £50,000 for the provision of a water supply from Tiritea that would “last for all time.” but they knew now how long that had been. Mr J. W. Smith referred to the loss of pressure in the city supply, and Mr Oakley commented that since the subject had been discussed l>y the association there had been an improvement. Mr Smith said that had not been the case in the street in which he resided. Comment was made that a scheme for the provision of a supply from the Pohangina River was estimated to cost £230,000, and the chairman said that at the present time it was proposed to spend nearly half that sum on the improvements in' the supply from Tiritea. He thought the association could not take action officially It was a matter for the individual ratepayers on the day of the poll. The discussion was not carried further.
