(From Our Own Correspondent.) HALCOMBE, Feb. 22.
At a meeting of the Halcomfre Recreation Ground improvement committee the secretary (Mr Davies) reminded those present that they had not yet e ected a permanent chairman. Mr W. A. Page was elected to the position. After a lengthy discussion regarding the position of the new pavilion, it was resolved that the building be erected near the alleyway behind the Post Office. Mi Page offered to donate the piles for the building. The money in hand falls short of the amount estimated by £3O. The following gentlemen, however, offered to guarantee the balance: Messrs \V. Stewart W S. Page, M. Wischnowsky, R. J. ’Managh’ and B. Wischnowsky. Mr Curtis was authorised to arrange for the purchase and delivery ot the materials required. . The Jubilee Executive met on Friday evening, Mr E. W. Cowdrey presiding. It was reported that Miss E. Fergusson had agreed to make the wreath to be laid on the war memorial. After a discussion on tho matter of a loud-speaker, it was decided that the instrument bo dispensed with. The _ jubilee booklet is now nearing completion and Messrs E. W. Cowdrey and M. C. Amadio were authorised to obtain quotations for printing it. The travelling expenses of the Feilding Pipe Band are to be paid from the jubilee funds. For the concert to be held on the Saturday, Messrs W. Davies and R. Williams were appointed to tho ticket office and doorkeeping respectively. Messrs E. R. Long and G. Burgess are to be M.C.’e. A committee of ladies is to have charge of the afternoon toa arrangements. Tho children are each to be given a bag containing a suitable lunch. The Guy Cup tennis competition was continued on Saturday, when the Halcombe A and B teams met Beaconsfield. The A team which travelled to Beaconsfield was defeated by 12 sets to 4, but the B team, playing at home, drew on sets, 8-all, but won on games, 76—60. Th efollowing are the details of the B grade match, Halcombo players being mentioned first:—Men's singles: N. Anderson lost to Buchanan, I—6; B. Wischnowsky lost to M. McLean, 5 -6; J. Martin lost to Bunn, 5—6; W. Davies lost to F. Arrow, 2—6. Women’s singles: Mrs Long lost to Mrs Bunn, 5—6; Miss R. Managh beat Miss J. Corpo, 6 —4; Miss M. Clapham beat Miss E. Greer, 6 —l; Miss M. Noffke beat Miss D. Coleman, 6—o. Mixed doubles: Anderson and Mrs Long lost to Buchanan and Mrs Bunn, 4—6; Wischnowsky and Miss Managh beat McLean and Miss Corpe, 6 —3; Martin and Miss Clapham beat Bunn and Miss Greer, 6—l; Davies and Miss Noffke beat Arrow and Miss Coleman, 6—2. Men’s doubles: Anderson and Wischnowsky lost to Buchanan and McLean, I—6;1 —6; Martin and Davies beat Arrow and Bunn, 6—o. Women’s doubles: Mrs Long and Miss Managh lost to Mrs Bunn and Miss Corpe, 5—6; Misses Clapham and Noffke beat Misses Greer and Coleman, 6 —o. At 11 o’clock on Friday night a fruit shop lately occupied by the late Mrs Blows was discovered to be on fire in the rear part of the building. Volunteers were speedily forthcoming, however, and some confined themselves to fighting the flames while others removed the stock of fruit and sweets from ‘Tho front of the building. The fire-fighters soon gained the upper hand, but not before the flames had gutted the rear rooms and partly destroyed a partition.
