OLD WAR HORSES
BACK FROM BELGIUM. Three horses and one mule which served with the British Army during the War were sent back to England from Belgium in January. This is one of the results of the work carried out in Belginm by Miss Huskie on behalf of Our Dumb Friends’ League. Several hundred British horses were sold in Belgium after the Armistice. Investigations by Miss Huskie, who began her work in Belgium in October last, revealed that most of these animals were ill-treated there. Striking examples of la.me, blind, and undernourished horses were recorded. Thanks to funds collected in Great Britain and among the British Colony in Brussels Miss Huskie was able to purchase about 60 British horses and mules. The majority of them were well
over 30 years of age and had to be humanly killed owing to wounds and disease. One horse which had been working at Louvain for 18 years w-as found in a very bad condition, but he neighed with joy when he again heard somebody addressing him in English. Many good homes were offered in England for those horses able to stand the sea voyage.
