LONDON AUCTIONS. A FIRM CLOSE. The London wool sales closed on Wednesday and the following reports of the concluding auction have been received in New Zealand : Dalgety and Co., Ltd. —Sales closed fairly firm at lower level of values. Competition brisk, but at times little irregular. Home trade and Continent operating. Russia buying lots suitable their trade. As compared with closing rates last scries (November-Deceinbcr) : Higher.

Prices for Merino and fine halfbred are nominal, practically none being offered. The range of prices is as follows: —Merino: G-S, 19d to 22d; L-M, 16d to 18d. Halfbred: 56-58’s: G-S, 19d to 23d; L-M, 15d to 18d. Halfbred, 50-56’s, G-S, 17d to 19d; L-M, 14£d to 16j,d. Fine crossbred ,48-50’s: G-S, 143 d to 17d; L-M, 14d to 15id. Fine crossbred: 46-48’s, G-S, 151 dto 17d; L-M, 14d to 15d. Crossbred, 44-46’s: G-S, 15jd to lBd; L-M, 14d to 15d. 'Crossbred, 40-44’s: G-S, 15jd to 17d; L-M, 133 d to 15d. Coarse crossbred, 36-40’s: G-S, 15jd to 16Jd; L-M, 133 d to 15d. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. —First sale of the 1937 series closed firmly, there being good all round competition. As compared with last sale’s closing rates, prices arc par to id per lb higher for greasy and scoured Merino super; id to Id per lb higher for greasy Merino medium and inferior; Id to lsd per lb for scoured Merino medium and inferior, end greasy crossbred; 2d to 2jd per lb higher for scoured crossbred, fine and medium crossbred stipe; 2id to 3d per lb higher for coarse crossbred slipo; and lid to 2d per lb higher for lambs. Merino and crossbred- Quotations for good average New Zealand greasy fleece: 64’s, 18d to 19d per lb; 60-64’s, 17id to 18id; 56-58’s, 18id to 19id; 56’s, 17d to 18d; 50’s, 15d to 16d; 48-50’s, 15d to 15id; 48’s, 14id to 15id; 46-48’s, 14id to 15id; 46’s, 14id to 151 d; 44-46’s, 14jd to 15id; 40-44’s, 14£d to 15id; 40’s, 141 d to 154 d. Levin and Co., Ltd. —Auctions closed with a good tone. Russia was prominent in bidding for Merinos and greasy crossbreds. Slipe wools generally are unchanged, but the market is firm for these. Total quantity offered, 106,600 bales; sold, 94,500; carried forward, 11,500, including 1500 bales from Now Zealand. Compared with the opening rates, wo quote:—Greasy Merino, best, Id to lid per lb lower; greasy Merino, average, Id to lid per lb lower; fine halfbrods, 50-56’s. Id per lb lower; extra fino crossbreds, 48-50’s, id per lb lower; fine, 46-48’s, unchanged; medium, 44-46’s, unchanged; coarse, 40-44’s, unchanged; low, 36-40’s, unchanged. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. —Sales closed before an average attendance of buyers. The market was irregular, though competition was animated. Continental and Bradford buyers wero the chief operators; 106,600 bales were offered for the series, and of these 94,500 were sold. • A good selection of wool was offered. Wo quote the following average realisations: —Greasy Merino, 60-64, yielding 48 por cent, 17d; greasy fine halfbred, 56-58, yielding 62 per cent, 17£d; greasy halfbred, 50-56, yielding 68 per cent, 16id; greasy three-quarter-bred, 48-50, yielding 74 per cent, 15£d; greasy fine crossbred, 46-48, yielding 75 per cent, 15d; crossbred lambs, 46-50, yield--46, yielding 75 per cent, 15d; greasy crossbred, 40-44, yielding 76 per cent, 15d; greasy coarse crossbred, 36-40, yielding 76 per cent, 15d; crossbred lambs, 46150, yielding 74 per cent, 15d. Australian Merino prices were 5 per cent lower. The market was firm for scoured and slipe wool. The Bank of New Zealand (produce department) : —Sales closed with prices somewhat irregular. Current quotations for wool of average condition: —Merinos: Super, 60-64’s, 19£d to 21d per lb; ordinary, 60-64’s, 16d to 17d; inferior, 60-64’s, 13d to 14d. Halfbrods: 56-58’s, 18d to 20d; 56’s, 17d to 18d; 50-56’s, 16£d to 17£d. Crossbreds : 50’s, 15£d to 16£d; 48-50's, 15d to 15£d; 46-48’s, 14} to lSdj 44-46’s, 14id to 15d; 40-44’s, 14£d to 15d; 36-40’s, 14ld to 15d. Tho Bank of New South Wales.—Sales closed with Merinos, and medium and fine crossbreds generally 5 per cent to 7£ per cent cheaper than at opening rates, while coarse crossbreds are firm at opening levels. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. - SYDNEY, Jan. 28. At tho wool sales 12,318 bales were off ered and 10,665 sold, also 967 privately. All well-grown and stylish wools sold distinctly in sellers' favour under brisk general competition. Greasy Merino made 30£d.
