MANAWATU COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer's report adopted at the meeting of the County Council this week was as follows: "County Roads and Bridges.—Maintenance metal lias been spread on Seabury Avenue and approaches to the Foxton beach have been shaped up with the grader. Draining has been undertaken in Kari Kan. The lower portion of Springs Road has now been brought into reasonable shape by the grader. Piaka Roid has been graded into shape. This being an earth road, a fair amount of scooping had to be undertaken to rest-ore it to a uniform grade. Downs and Puawai Roads have been patched with surface metal. Willows have been cut and drains have been cleaned on Tompkin's Line. The culvert which had been washed out on Leen's Line has been repaired. Several concrete pipes have been renewed, 147 cubic .yards of filling have been replaced and an outlet drain has been dug. Ocean Beach and Riverbank Roads have been graded, and clay has been spread. The concrete foundations for Taylor's Line bridge have been /placed. The abutments and centre pier are also almost complete. Surface metal has been spread on the Halcombe-Mt. Stewart and Te Rakehou Roads. The usual maintenance work has been continued and the road surfaces have been graded in the order of their urgency. "Main Highways.—The shoulders of the Sanson-Bulla and Sanson-Awahuri Roads have been built up with metal. The bridge approaches on the Feild-bg-Awahuri Road have been patched and the surface metalling on this road has been completed. The survey in connection with the reconstruction is still in progress. The ordinary grading and maintenance work has been continued on the Himatangi-Sanson highway. The concrete hand-rail of Grace's bridge was smashed by a transport lorry which caught fire, and the bituminous road surface at this point was dnmaged. A claim for repairs is being forwarded to the owners of the Jorrj At another point approximately one and a-half miles south of Sanson the bituminous road surface has been damaged by a tractor. A claim for repairs is also being forwarded to the owners. Trees have been cut back at the approach to the Oroua River bridge at Ivopane. Clay has been Spread on the Tangimoana highway from Campion's Line to Tangimoana. The Foxton Beach and Whirokino Roads have been patched with maintenance metal. It has not been possible to grade the metal surface portion of the Whirokino Road owing to the sand fillings on the northern end 'of the road. All metal surfaced highways have been graded in order of their urgency.
