PERCEPTIBLY the skyline of' Palmerston North is altering and among' the handsome building's just erected, 01 in course of erection is that called the Broadway Chambers. Offering all the amenities that a progressive business requires, Broadway Chambers have been built in what, in a lew years’ time, is destined to be the heart of the Broadway area. The contract has been executed to their utmost satisfaction by Messrs Karlson and Malcolm, the timber supplies coming from the extensive yards of Messrs (J. and A. Odlin, Ltd. Cement specified for the concrete work was supplied by Messrs TJopwoods, Ltd., from the heavy stocks of builders’ materials which they carry. Three well-fitted shops occupy the frontage, with a six foot wide ceramic tiled corridor leading to a staircase ot bronze grille balustrading. This gives access to the very up-to-date dental suite designed ior Air f. C. Stockwell. It is an entirely self-contained unit, has strip lighting and walls of white plaster, the interior having a very quiet and restful effect. There are two surgeries, a waiting-room, recovery room, work-room, reception hall, and office. Four large display windows, fitted in polished oak frames, and with the upper portion shaded by mottled granite to give the clearest perspective, front the premises for Messrs King and Teppett, furnishing specialists. Bronze ventilators and ceramic tiled ingoings arc other features of the entrance to the central office, and an imposing showroom, 75 feet by 5U feet. This is considered to be one ol the best of its kind in Now Zealand. It is surrounded on three sides by a balcony artistically distempered in cream and buff colours, with insulated boarding to maintain an even temperature. room so designed as to give absolutely correct variations of light and shade for an adequate appreciation of their period reproductions, walnut and mahogany suites, solt iurnishing iabrics, and diapeiies. Kells, who specialises in dainty lingerie, childrens wear, and badge embroidery. Opal hall shades provide effective lighting for the Hollywood Millinery Salon (Miss M. Isaacs), who lias her premises divided into a ready-to-wear department, a model department, and a workroom. Rich carpetings of gold and black tones, relieved by a lightning effect, cover the floor, and harmonising with this wall colours shade off gradually to the palest and most delicate hires. Other attractive features are a beautifully painted wall panel, a large glass display cabinet, and a Moorish archway. Dispensing completely with projections and overhanging cornices, the facade of the building lias a modern treatment, with rounded tops for the first lloor windows of steel, with plate-glass centres. The solid plastering which gives the exterior of the building such a neat appearance, is the work of Messrs Johnston and Wix, while Mr S. Thorburn is responsible tor the fibrous plaster interiors. Painting by Mr Herbertson adds to the harmony of the colour scheme. The lighting installations, which have called for the services of a skilled technician, have been made by Mr E. P. Wix. Joinery .fittings have come from the factory of Messrs Spencer and Drake, and the plumbing has been entrusted to .Messrs Beattie and 1 rocter, both firms with high reputations for their workmanship. The plans for the building were prepared by Mr Robin Hood, who is designing other new blocks in the immediate vicinity. Mr P. G. Cope, who was instrumental in the formation of the company which has had the foresight to erect this building, is secretary for Broadway Enterprises. Ltd., and is associated with another similar building scheme now projected in the same area. He is one of the group who have the greatest confidence in the commercial prospects of this section ol' Broadway.
