BRIDGE SETS

MAKE THEM FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS. DECORATIVE APPLIQUE WITH INSERTED MOTIFS. (Coypright.) Appliqued cross stitch card motifs, or filet crocheted motifs inset, are gay little decorations for bridge table covers, and for napkins to match refreshment covers for bridge tables. Tho sets make ideal gifts for Christmas. It may be mentioned, also, that a set so ornamented makes an appreciated prize. Anyone can design the four motifs; hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades because the patterns can be copied off a pack of playing cards. SET IN COLOURFUL APPLIQUE. A smart set for gift purposes is made of daffodil coloured linen with the edges hemstitched in orchid crochet silk. Appliqued in each corner of the table cover are 3-inch squares of orchid linen on each one of which one of the inotits is cross stitched in daffodil coloured crochet silk. Napkins

are made to match except that only one corner of each is ornamented. Each napkin lias a different motif on it. DARNED FILET CROCHET. Another novel way of making such a set is to roll the edges of the cloth and napkins and whip with a contrasting colour. Every half or threequarter inch around the edges make a knot of fringe as follows:—With a crochet hook draw a three strand loop of the crochet silk through the linen close to the edge. Hook the six strands (that is, both ends of the silk) through the loop and draw firmly. Cut the ends to form a fringe j-ineh deep. Decorate with 3-inch squares of filet done in the crochet silk, with the designs darned in a crochet silk matching the linen in colour. The fringe can ho omitted and a simpler edge be worked as follows :—Use the contrasting coloured crochet silk and crochet over a very narrow turned hem. Make the tassels in groups of three at each corner. One comes directly at the point of each corner and one at each side of it. COLOUR SCHEMES. Colour schemes suggested are the daffodil and orchid, apple green and daffodil yellow, cream white and pastel green, pure white and old blue; pastel blue and old rose, and ecru with pumpkin yellow.
