HOUSING SCHEME.
FACTORIES TO BE LEASED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. The construction of 375 houses in the Wellington district as tlie first large housing scheme prepared by the new Department of Housing Construction will begin early in the New Year. Tenders will be called immediately for 19 contracts. The Government also intends to invite applications for the lease of the new joinery factories at Kaiwarra (Wellington) and Penrose (Auckland) to firms offering to manufacture joinery on the most favourable terms. Officially it is estimated that the construction of 400 houses in 28 weeks will directly provide employment for about 770 men. Tenders for the housing contracts and the lease of the Kaiwarra factory close on January 5, 1937. The department now has; in hand the preparation of contracts lor the Auckland scheme, tlie first group of houses being situated at the Orakei settlement.
