MR LOVELOCK LEAVES

ADVICE TO ATHLETES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 8. His New Zealand tour had been most interesting and enjoyable and he had greatly appreciated the Government’s invitation which had made the visit possible, said Mr J. E. Lovelock before leaving by the Aorangi this afternoon. He said that he was definitely giving up running for the next few years and possibly altogether. The standard of athletics in New Zealand was very good, considering the limited opportunities for competing in first-class company. “Athletes in New Zealand, however, don’t work hard, consistently, and regularly enough. They appear to have no definite plan at the back of their minds and just run blindly,” he said. “They should train regularly and have a definite aim in view. It is useless to start to train one week and expect to be fit tiie next week.” For winter exercise he advocated cross-country runing with no racing at all.
