RACING AT WOODVILLE.

TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS BHIGHT. CLASS HORSES ENGAGED. (By “Moturoa.”) Woodvillo 'will.bo .the centre of racing interest to-morrow, where the Woodvillo Jockey Club opens ils summer meeting, which concludes on Saturday. Brighter prospects have- not been assured for many a long day, and the club should enjoy one of its most successful meetings. The week-end rain proved a blessing in disguise as far as the tracks are concerned. This is one of the finest courses in the North Island and the tracks uro now in perfect order for racing, which factor will add to the success of the meeting. An all-round improvement in the class of horses engaged at the meeting is most noticeable, and, with good-sized fields carded for all events, there is plonty of sco_pc for speculation and a very appreciable percentage of totulisator increase should be shown in common with all other meetings in the Dominion this season. Tho secretary, Air W. A. Lyon, has arrangements well in hand for a bumper meeting. Excursion trains will convey patrons from all quarters at a very reasonable cost, while tho afternoon lea will bo served on the cafeteria system at a reduced charge. As usual tho single pool (75-25) system of betting will be iu vogue. Racing opens with the 12.15 3UANGA-ATUA HURDLES HANDICAP, of £9O. One mile and a half.

Lord Hereford won in such attractive fashion at Eeilding last week tiiat he stamped himself as one of the most useful young hurdlers around these parts, lie has gone up only 81b for that win, and the class here looks weaker. There is a chance, however, that lie will be reserved for Saturday and the stable’s faith will be placed in Tuhoma, who ran second in his last start to Laconic at Hastings. Bluo Tiger is reported to be in good order, while that dashing jumper Otauru King won well at Levin. Red Rufus is another with distinct possibilities, and Count Willonyx is solid, though not a particularly lucky horse. Old Taura Lad has won at his last two starts, but in the absence of Lord Hereford, bettors may incline towards Tahoina, Otauru King, Blue Tiger. 12.55 MAIDEN STAKES, of £65. Five furlongs

This race will be run in divisions _ if tllo starters exceed 19. In tho first division a fa.voured trio may be Black Frost, Sunny TSlonde, Perfect Lady. In tho second division there will bo support for Black Fox, Aube, Count Siegfried. Tho big race of the day is the 1.35 BOLTON HANDICAP, of £l4O. One rnilo and a quarter. Red Manfred 9 3 Alchemic 713 Werohia 8 9 Full Throttle 710 Arctic King 8 8 Martara 7 10 Tout le Monde 8 1 Red Manfred’s farm this season has been below his best, but ho has , been working well again and there is no doubt a repetition of iiis real form would make him a very hard horse to beat here. Werohia has raced badly since lie ran second in the New Zealand Cup, but ho is said to be an Auckland Cup starter and will need to play a prominent part here to justify that trip. Arctic King has not raced this season, but Tout lo Monde has won ono small race in eight starts and may show one of his occasional glimpses of really good form. Alchemic and- Full Throttle will need to improve a lot on their recent displays, and much interest will bo taken in tho three-year-old Martara, who has now won in his last three starts. Martara has worked as well as could bo desired of late, and the Awapuni representative will go to tho post a very lit horse. In an interesting contest a wellbacked trio should be Martara, Red Manfred, Werohia. 2.15NURSERY HANDICAP, of £75. Fivo furlongs.

Most of these youngsters aro unraced, but their number includes several of the choicest blood lines, and there may be a really class performer among them. This division includes Relative (Posterity— Eulogy), Cherry Picker (Chief Ruler— Cherry Pie), and Private Bunsby (Captain Bunsby—Toiling Tessio). Geira is a smart galloper and was second at Opuki, while Lady Montana and F’elicitation have also shown pace. It seems probahlo that tho favourites will be. Geira, La*y Montana, Relative. 2.55 TRIAL HANDICAP, of £7O. Six furlongs.

Koliika beat Great Hope at Dannevirko in July, while Export, Taupiri, and Luculius Lad have .been successful this season. Promising form bus been shown by En Vidcttc and Rotoma, and it would not surprise if the best backed horses were Rotoma, Export, Lucullus Lad. 3.35 OETE HANDICAP, of £lls. Six furlongs.

Pakanui is a class sprinter and was a winner at llicarton last month, 110 has had time to freshen up again and his chances hero cannot bo denied. Karl scored in no uncertain manner the second day at Feilding, his short preparation being insuflicient for his race on the opening day. lie is still susceptible to improvement. Lavina is a good nmro and has won twico this season. Under a light weight she must be accounted a hard proposition. Syincony is brilliant, but lacks stamina, and Invoice has not revealed his best form so far this season. Bodylino is always a possibility, but tho pick of the light weights may ho Mata Ilari. However, patrons may show a preference for tho scrip of Karl, Pakanui, Lavina. 4.15 MANGARAWA HANDICAP, of £BO Six furlongs.

Peter Beckford let his admirers down at Levin, but this bigger course will suit him belter. However, he will meet strong opposition from Kindheart, who opened her thrcc-ycar-old season with an attrac-

tivc effort into fourth place behind •& strong field at Feilding. Blygain is a useful sort, and so is Prevail, while Patagonia, Iluntette, P&ngo, and Vonia Park will not be friendless. Form, however, seems to favour the chances of Kindhcart, Peter Bcckford, Prevail. 5.0 WIiAMTI HANDICAP, of £BS. One mile and a distance.

Although Soho failed at Hastings, there is no doubt he is a. good, solid galloper, and he must be respected here. Ingenuity has gone on the right way since her effortless win at Foilding, but King’s Lancer, who ran poorly on the Monday after his good showing on tho opening day, should have a say on this roomy course. Waipiro is not without chances, while Whctuma is always “knocking at the door.’’ However, Corroborec will mako a grout appeal. Ho ran a wonderful raco at Bulls and since then has done very fine track work. He won on this course twelve months ago and should, be right in his element. Maestro is better than liis recent Foilding form would indicate, and is liable to show a big improvement. Nightlass and Blue Shirt may be tho pick of tho remainder, but most support may be forthcoming for Corroborec, Ingenuity, Maestro.
