ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
COUNCIL MEETING. A meeting of the Eeilding and District Acclimatisation Society’s council was held last evening, Mr I’. E. Stevens being in the chair. A letter was received from settlers of the Pohangina Valley requesting that the Pohangina district be kept closed for pheasant shooting. The letter added that lot) birds had been reared and liberated, and residents were desirous of their being protected. The letter was signed by 40 settlers. ■ Mr G. Lawrence stated that the Pohangina Valley had been closed for pheasant shooting for three years. The chairman thought that the request should be acceded to, providing the close season was not allowed to go on indefinitely. Mr Alpo moved that the valley be closed for a further year, and Mr Laurence seconded the motion, which was carried.
Mr Stevens said that the pheasants were reported to be making good progress, and it would be a pity to discourage their liberation by allowing them to be shot out before they had become properly established. Regarding the shooting season, the secretary suggested that tho same conditions as last year be-observed, with the proviso that the license fee be 255.
