OPIUM SEIZED.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Deo. 8. Twenty tins of opium of a total retail value of something like £4OO were seized by detectives and Customs officials on Thorndon station last night just before the departure of the Auckland express. Basil Francis Pocock, aged 26. a seaman, pleaded guilty before Mr Ferner, S.Tu., to-day, to being found in possession of a dangerous drug imported in contravention of the Act. It was explained that accused was arrested after he bought his train ticket, and the tins were found hidden among his clothing in a suitcase. Mr R. H. Boys (for accused) urged that he was lint the person who had brought the opium into the country, but merely the carrier from Wellington to Auckland, where he belonged. Accused v/.is convicted and fined £25 and costs; he was allowed a week in which to pay.
