CUBA STREET CHURCH A YEAR OF PROGRESS. The annual meeting of the Cuba Street Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild was held yesterday afternoon, Rev. A. Blakemore presiding. After extending a welcome, Mrs P. J. Meller, the retiring president, thanked the guild for the loyal support accorded her. The report stated that the year had been one of marked progress and achievement, and the atmosphere of Christian fellowship which pervaded lneetings had made them a joy to all who attended. The average attendance had been 3-1, with a roll number of 48, which was an increase on the previous year. Rev. A. Blakemore and Mrs Blakemore, who had been welcomed early in the year, had brought with them such a spirit of friendliness and comradeship that they had been an inspiration to them all. Mrs Blakemore had replaced Mrs H. L. Richards as vice-president, Mrs A. E. Fisher had taken Mrs J. Candy’s place as treasurer and Mrs AV. A. Boniface had attended the meetings of the Alanawatu branch of the National Council of Women, in place of Mrs Richards. Mrs F. Budden had been appointed to the committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs Dale. Mrs Ferguson, earlv in the year, had been welcomed hack after her long absence front Palmerston North. The death of Mrs Tnknen, a valued member, was recorded with regret. The programmes during the year had been bright and interesting. One of the biggest efforts of the year had been the spring fair, £4O-odd having been raised, out of which £35 had been voted to the church trust fund. Visits had been interchanged with St. Paul’6 Guild. Mr Blakemore congratulated the guild on its report which, he said, indicated that it was a live body that endeavoured to develop the social and spiritual life of the church, as well as laising very necessary funds. He commented on the large membership. Mr Blakemore expressed his personal appreciation of the loyalty and faithful work of the guild, and said he hoped that the coming year would be one of similar good service for God and their Church. There was a balance of £9 8s 2d on the year’s working, and Air Blakemore congratulated Airs Fisher on the way in which she had kept the books. Air Blakemore, in a short speech, said that they were living in a difficult age crowded with new experiences, through which people were trying to find satisfaction in life. Life really meant giving all of themselves—body, mind, and soul—to the purposes God had ordained for them. It was so easy for the Church to lower its standard and not so easy for it to raise the standard of life. Ho stressed their parts as members of the Church, and urged his listeners to have high ideals in their private lives, and a strong
