LYTTON STREET SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Tlie monthly meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee was held I last evening, Mr C. V. Jewell presiding. Also present were Mesdames E. Scott, 7*. Donaldson, Messrs L. Jenkins, C. V. Guy, J. S. Tingey, H. T. Simmonds, 1\ Fawcett; also Mr C. A. Batt (headmaster). The headmaster's report road as follows :—The roll number is 318. The average attendance for November was 299.5. Parents' Day was held on a larger scale than last year, and in spite of poor weather over £2B was cleared; £7 13s 6d of this sum was the result of a bottle drive into which the pupils entered heartily. The staff wishes to thank .Air L. J. Wild, of the Agricultural High School, for the loan of the maypole. I wish to thank the parents who have this year very willingly and keenly supported all school functions. In connection with the sports, motor cars have been willingly offered and no function has suffered from lack of enthusiastic support. The committee has boon a very pleasing one with which to work and to its fine attitude a great deal of the year's success is due. The ' Parents' Association has also function--1 ed admirably and has proved to be a ponuine asset to the school. I wish to i thank the staff for their hearty co- ! operation in all that contributes to the wolfare of the pupils. The names have not as vet been engraved on the trophy cups this year. The board lias recently installed electric light ill all rooms of the school and has also provided blinds for the windows on the sunny side of j the building.—Adopted | Tho chairman stated that no procress had been made regarding the formation of an Old Pupils' Association owing to other matters having engaged

the attention of the committee during the mouth.

A letter was received from Mr J. B. Grant regarding the Bible-in-schools movement in the Otago district, and enclosing booklets showing the form of devotional exercises observed The headmaster reported that the five mimices' daily devotional exercises were not being carried on at the school, but tlie weekly half-hour exercises were being continued. As a rule, only two ministers attended, whereas previously three preachers had conducted services every week.

Referring to tho recent Parents' Day, tho chairman remarked upon tho success of the function and stated that the display of handwork and other work had been widely appreciated and subject to very favourable comment. Arising out of the headmaster's report, tho chairman stated that the children had collected over 2000 bottles.

Mrs E. Scott moved that the parents, teachers and children be tuanked for the splendid response to the drive for bottfes. It was decided that a cricket pitch be laid down for tho use of scholars, and that the work be carried out by a "working lice." Bcgarding tho matter of the committee being a member of the Mana-watu-Oroua School Committees' Association, the chairman said that he could not see that any useful purpose would be served by being a member. He was of tho opinion that the Education Boar<» was the guardian of the schools and lie moved that tho committee forward its resignation to the association. _ Mr Tingey, in seconding the motion, said that the Education Board was comprised of school committeemen and that the requirements of the schools were carefully considered and as far as possible acceded to. To him the association was a "fifth wheel of the coach'' and he considered that the Education Board would do all in its power to assist tlie schools under its control. <\ftcr further discussion, the resolution was carried unanimously. . It was decided that the breaking-up cerwnonv be held on the day preceding the closing of the school for the Christmas holidays, and that Hon J. &. rv ,hp M P Air T. Collins (-Mayor), nml Mr'j' W Batchelar (a member of the Education Board) be invited to attend.

Present at the Lytton Street School Parents' Association meeting, held las? evening, were Mesdames J. Hayes, G. Moore, T. Donaldson, J. Symoiids, E. Scott, L. Jenkins, J. Edhousc, Messrs T. Donaldson (chairman), C. A. Batt (secretary), J. Hoyes, L. Jenkins, and 0. V. Guy. Tho financial .statement regarding the recent gala day revealed a profit of £2B-odd, and the chairman congratulated members on the success of the function.

It was decided that a letter be sent to the School Committee suggesting that a dozen forms be made, and that the matter of a pergola being built he investigated by the committee. The question of procuring a second-hand piano was discussed, and it was resolved to leave tho subject until the uext meeting of the association. During the interim members were asked to make inquiries regarding tho possibility of securing a piano, it was agreed that a portion of tlie funds raised as a result of the gala be set aside as the nucleus of a fund for an assembly hall.
