MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
BY-LAW CASES. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charged witli driving a motor-car at the intersection of Main and George Streets at a speed which, having regard to ail the circumstances, might have been dangerous to the public, H. B. Richards pleaded guilt} Senior-Sergeant Monarty said defendant had driven at a speed of between 30 and 35 miles an hour. A penalty of £2, with 3s costs, was imposed. A. V. Eustego was charged with a similar offence at the intersection of Church Street and the Square. It was stated that his speed had been 35 miles tin hour. Defendant was lined £2, with 3s costs.
A line of £l, with KJs costs, was inflicted on H. F. Ross (Mr H. It. Cooper) on a charge of failing to give way to traffic approaching from the rigfit at the intersection oi Ferguson and Albert Streets on May ID last.
\V\ J. Barnes (Mr J. A. Grant) was .fined £l, with 10s costs, on a charge of failing to give way to traffic approaching irom the rigfit at the corner of Ferguson and Ruahine Streets. He was stated by SeniorSergeant Monarty to have been involved in a collision with another motor vehicle. Mr Grant said the breach was due to an error of judgment.
A penalty of £l, with 15s costs, was imposed on Mrs Dorothy Jiurretl (Funding) on a charge of driving a car at the intersection of Matipo and Rangitikei Streets at a speed which, having regard to all the circumstances, might have been dangerous to the public.
For riding an unliglited cycle at night, Joe iwng was fined 10s with 10s costs.
Stanley Sanies was fined £2, with 3s costs, on a charge under the Police Ulfences Act.
A sentence of fourteen days' imprisonment for failure to comply with a maintenance order was passed on Cumberland Cane, his release to ho conditional on the payment of arrears of £2 Is Oil and £3 Is Od respectively tor his wife and children.
Stated to be £SB 10s in arrears on a maintenance order, Archibald William Gilchrist, of Dannevirke, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as he paid 25s weekly. William Nelson Thompson, of Gisborne, stated to be £9 5s in arrears on a maintenance order in favour oi his wife, and £9 15s for his children, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on payment of the arrears.
