LAWS OF HEALTH.

ADDRESS BY DR. WILLIAMS. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) occupied the chair at the Opera House, on Sunday, when a large audience assembled to hear Dr. Ulric Williams on the subject of "The Tragic Farce of Disease." The lecturer began by stating that man's attempts to deal with disease had been limited to his own wisdom, and these efforts would become more effective when they had been illuminated by the higher wisdom that worked around and in all of us. That wisdom could be put into operation by faith —faith exercised in accordance with the laws of God.

"There is no such thing as acuta disease," continued the speaker. "There is acute illness. Disease is a degenerative process due to faulty living. Acute illness is Nature's way of curing disease. We have looked upon acute illness as disease. Orthodox methods have confined themselves to suppressing acute illness, thus interfering with Nature's method of curing disease. Three things are essential to health: A well-contented mind; a wise use of food; and general happiness. "There is a healing spirit operating in man that requires absolute obedience to the laws of health. It is of no use for a patient to expect a healer to do things he can do for himself. There are two causes of disease:—Psychological and physical. Unhappiness, fear, resentment and self-pity are potent causes of disease. Wrong attitudes are by far the greatest cause of disease. We must first consider the attitude of the sufferer to life in general. No resource will bring relief until mental tension is released." Dr. Williams instanced cases wherein cures were effected by solving th» mental conflicts of his patients. "The physical laws must, of course, be observed," (be speaker proceeded. "Through ignoring this, the method* in our orthodox institutions cause more disease than they cure." Dr. Williams averred that three quarters of the patients in our hospitals need not be there.

There were two causes of chronic disease—people living faultily and doctors suppressing symptoms. Dr. Williams said that when Christ counselled people to forgive their" enemies He was essentially scientific. The harbouring of grudges had definite physical results. There were several degrees of spiritual consciousness ranging from the purely animal to the higher spiritual. The higher the stage of spirituality, the better the chances of recovery. Faith actuated the healing power within us. Faith was too often mixed up with religious dogma. The dogma did not do the work —unless people thought it did.

In speaking of diabetics and their cure, Dr. Williams stated that betes_ had gone up 50 per cent, since the introduction and use of insulin. "Germs," said the speaker, "do not cause disease. They follow it. Germs can carry disease to an unhealthy person only." The lecturer stated that sixteen'minerals entered into the constitution of living tissue. With a deficiency of these health could not be maintained. Dr. Williams repeated that human wisdom wae insufficient to euro disease. We must put ourselves into alignment with the higher powers. The lecture, which was listened to with rapt attention, was followed by questions, which were answered in an interesting and effective manner. Tho meeting closed with a vote o c i thanks to tho speaker.
