THE ROMANCE 0E TRADE FINE LINEN FROM IRELAND THERE is no record of when linen was first made, but it is mentioned in the Rook of Genesis as the fabric used for robing- the princes of Egypt, and it is assumed that ancient Egypt first cultivated the llax plant and discovered its use. Nowadays, flax is grown in many countries, though much of it is either too coarse or too fine and brittle in fibre for making the best linen. In the rich river-valley soils and the mild, moist climate of Northern Ireland, however, flax grows to perfection, and it is there that the world’s finest linen is made. Even in the days before machine looms, linen-weaving was a big industry in Ireland. In rooms dim with the smoke from peat fires, or outdoors in the mellow Irish sunshine, the women of the country worked at their wooden spinning wheels,' and the flax they spun was woven on hand looms. The first machine-driven looms were introduced to Ireland about a hundred years ago. Since then the industry has grown to such huge proportions that Ireland now sends her linen all over the world, and its superb quality and durability has become a by-word.
