VALUABLE BOOK.

TRAVELS, IN AFRICA. SAVED FROM DESTRUCTOR. A reminder that many interesting and perhaps valuable books are thrown away at times because they look like so much rubbish is supplied in a letter which Mr T. AlcNnb, Mayor of Alount Eden, has received from a friend in Johannesburg, and also in ail articlo published in the Johannesburg Star. When the Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committee was active one of the many matters dealt with was the distribution of books to relief camps. The books were sent to the committee by wellwishers and many books were considered to be in too dilapidated a condition to warrant repair. When the relief depot was closing down a few months ago these discarded books and periodicals were to be sent to the destructor. Air AlcNab was interested enough to look them over and among the number lie saw a copy of the first volume of Lichtenstein’s “Travels in Southern Africa in the years 1803, 1804, 1805, and 1806,” printed in 1812. Air AlcNab sent the book to the Johannesburg Star, which in turn offered it to the Johannesburg Public Library, by which it has been gratefully accepted. According to the librarian, Air R. F. Kennedy, Lichtenstein’s Travels are much sought after in Africa. —Auckland Star.
