FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent ) FOXTON, Nov. 27. Despite inclement weather there was a good attendance• at the Beach Hall when a farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs C. Hodge, who are taking up their residence in Palmerston North at an early date. Opportunity was taken by Mr A. D. Maepherson (secretary of the Manawatu Heads Improvement Society) to express the regret felt by those present at the pending departure of Mr avd Mrs Hodge and family. During their residence at Manawatu Heads Mr and Mrs Hodge had taken a keen interest in the welfare of the bench. Mr Maepherson asked Mr Hodge to accept a handsome dinner set as a token of appreciation and goodwill. Other speakers added their tributes. Tho annual report of the Foxton Surf and Live-Saving Club states, inter alia: In spite of the fact, that the club suffered the loss of several of its more experienced members, who were transferred to other centres, a good strength was maintained to patrol the beach. A severe loss was sustained when the coach-instructor, Mr K. A. Robbie, was transferred to Marton. It is much to bo regretted that a drowning accident occurred at the Beach this year and, hnppcnting as it did at an out-of-season period, it came as a very unpleasant surprise to find comments in the Press regarding life-saving there. Tho public must remember that the club is purely voluntary and that members give up much of their summer leisure to a duty which tends to become monotonouus and irksome: Miss B. Whittaker, manageress of a local theatre since its reopening., severs her connection with the theatre to-morrew evening. During her residence in Foxton she lias made many friends and has taken an active interest in the social life of the community. While topping trees Mr J. O’Donoghue, of Avenue Road, had the misfortune to gash the back of his hand. Tho wound necessitated the insertion of several stitches. Mr 11. Ruhack, an employee of the Orotin Downs cheese factory, had his foot severely scalded as the result of some boiling water entering his gumboot.
