SHEARERS’ AGREEMENT.
HOURS CLAUSE SUSPENDED. Per Press Association. ■ CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 28. The suspension of the hours clause in the shearers’ agreement last night averted the crisis threatening the wool industry which, at one stage, appeared likely to involve New Zealand in the loss of £1,000,000. The clause provides that work in the sheds must cease at noon on Saturdays. Because of the abnormally broken weather experienced, particularly in the North Island, the operation of the clause had become impracticable. Shearing had been seriously checked, and there was a grave danger of the deterioration of wool. The clause was suspended by the authority of the Minister of Labour, and with the consent of the parties to the agreement—the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation and the New Zealand Workers’ Union.
