OPIKI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIICI, Nov. 25. The preliminary school judging of calves and lambs, in the Horowhcnua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club competitions took place in Opiki School grounds on November 25. It must be gratifying to those whoso enthusiasm is responsible for the promotion of these competitions that there appears to be considerably more interest this year than has been tho case in the past. Seventeen calves in all came before tho judge (Mr Tippler, of Shannon) — ten in the senior class and seven in the- junior— a distinct improvement over tho usual five or six of previous years. In the lamb classes there were nine entries, the judge being Mr Munford (Shannon). Tho weather which was threatening remained fine and tho function was enjoyed by all, including - quite a considerable number of parents. Following the judging Mr Tippler addressed the children upon tho type distinctions of a dairy animal and upon tho care and attention required in rearing tho calf. Tho following are the results: —Senior calves (10 entries): Care and attention, Betty _ Wildo 1, Milly Hocking 2, John Marriott 3, Mavis Marriott 4, Ronald Taylor h.c. Typo: Betty Wilde 1, John Marriott 2, Mavis Marriott 3. Shorthorn special; Peggy Morgan 1. Junior calves (7 entries) : Jocolyn Norman 1, Betty Morgan 2, Joe Southoo 3, John Percy v.h.c., Lawrence Percy h.c. Lambs (Romney) : Jean Taylor 1, Neil Simpson 2, Bclty. Morgan 3, Maurice Miers 4. Lambs (short woolled) : Trevor Henderson 1, Anne Mabey 2, Nancy Mabey 3, Edna Croad 4. The friends of Mrs S. Young will be glad to hear that she is making good progress towards recovery from her illness.
