REPERTORY SOCIETY.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Mr M. H. Oram presided at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Repertory Society, which was held this week. The report stated that the past year had proved by far the most successful season in the history of the society. The financial membership had trebled and now stood at 192, while many more people had signified their intention of Joining next season. The continuously increasing attendance at the monthly readings gave ample proof of the success of the innovation of staging all readings as far as possible. The staged productions had enhanced the reputation of the society. The programme had demanded additional expense, but much of this was of a capital and nonrecurring nature, and the society’s financial position was most satisfactory. The work of the secretary (Mr J. Tasker) had again been noteworthy, and it was a matter of very great regret that his outstanding services would not be available to the society next year. The season had been conspicuous for the willing and unselfish team work of both members and executive, and particularly of the joint secretaries (Mrs L. Bale and Miss M. Mortland). The thanks of the society were also due to Mr Red ward, caretaker of the Empire Hall. Reference was made to the big loss to the society occasioned by the departure of Mr A. C. Zohrab from Palmerston North. The election of officers resulted: — Patron, Mr David Mitchell; president, Mr M. H. Oram; vice-presidents, Professor G. S. Peren, Dr. F. H. McDowall, Messrs B. J. Jacobs, and J Murray; hon. treasurer, Mr L. Plimmer; hon. secretaries, Mrs L. Bale and' Miss M. Mortland; hon. auditor, Mr \V. L. Birnie: committee, Misses IT. Hancock, M. Richards, Messrs J. W. Davidson. J. G. Driver. T. M. N. Rodgers, N. M. Wallace and W. M. Webster. A number of recommendations to the incoming committee were passed, and the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the outgoing members of the executive—Mrs L. Bennett. Mr J. Tasker, and Mr K. N. Struthers—none of whom sought re-election.
