CAUGHT BY WAVE.

Per Press Association. DARGAVTLLE, Nov. 26,

A huge wave rushed up the beach at Chase’s Gorge yesterday afternoon and caught three motor-cars, which were washed up the gorge and left many yards from their original positions. These rollers, which occasionally occur when spring tides arc making and backed by strong westerlev winds, have caught many unwary motorists, and those caught yesterday we.ro lucky to escape only minor damage to their cars.

The wave swept up the gorge and reached a point about 100 yards above the ordinary high-water mark. Two empty cars and one with two occupants were caught by the wall of water and carried across to the opposite side, where they were left high but not dry. The cars were not seriously damaged, but they could not be driven away under their own power. They were pushed further up the gorge to avoid any possible recurrence. Several other waves did follow, but none reached anywhere near such a high level. Inquiries have been made at Pouto and Maunganui Bluff, but no accident or damage is reported.
