FEILDING’S BIG RACE.

MANCHESTER HANDICAP OPEN. FARMER’S CHANCE IN FLYING. (By “Moturoa.”) Fine contests are assured in the main events at fieilding on Saturday and tile Manchester Handicap, the big event of the day’s racing, presents a very open appearance. 'JLlle list is headed by Spiral, who has yet to strike winning form this season, though he has run several good races. He galloped particularly well at Wanganui on Tuesday morning over seven furlongs, and has always raced well on this course. Last year he contested the sprint event and beat Whenuakura and a smart field. He makes more appeal than Grand Jury, who has been racing very poorly this season and was beaten on Ins merits at Levin. Werohia ran a fine race into second place in the New Zealand Cup, but when produced in the Fendalton Handicap shaped very disappointingly. He may have been ieeling the effects of his hard race in the Cup, but he will need to improve a lot on that second effort at Riccarton. Grateful ran a good race in the Waikato Cup, but cut up so badly on Monday that it looks as if all is not well with this smart Raceful four-year-old who would need to be only somewhere near his best to do well here. Might would have an outside chance on his JMasterton running, but his form is hard to follow. On the other hand Rona Bay, who won at Masterton returned to her bost form to win the Levin Handicap in attractive style and she appears to be at the peak of her form. She has plenty of early pace to secure a good position in the running and she stays on well. Her chief source of danger may bo Royal Secret, who made all the pace for her on Saturday and now meets her on 71b better terms. Royal Secret is an honest galloper and on this turning course she may open her winning account over ten furlongs, though a slightly shorter distance is suie to bo more in her favour.

Aussie Ra will be all the better for his races at Trcntham and needs only to strike form to play a prominent part. However, Tiger Gain, a free goer Who won the Manawatu Cup two years ago, is back to form and won as ho liked at Hastings this month with 8.6. He is a good sort when right and his return to form is encouraging. Round Score will need to improve out of all knowledge on his Levin performance. In a good betting race Tiger Gain, Spiral, Rona Bay, and Royal Secret are all likely to find favour with bettors. SMART FIELD OF SPRINTERS. Although only eight remain in the Flying Handicap they represent a high clasß of sprinter and there is scope for keen speculation. Oratory, the outstanding filly last season, did not strike her real form on her Australian campaign, but she showed plenty of pace in several races against good horses and the trip is certain to have benefited her. Form, however, points very strongly to Farmer making a great appeal to backers. He ran second to Karl at Wanganui in September and after failing 'the second day, “walked” in at Waverley with 8.8 and scored in likewise easy fashion at Bulls with 9.5. Farmer has never been better than just at present, and his liking for the course will cause his scrip to be at a premium. Lono Raider will be in demand after his stylish win at Levin, but he will not be able to concede any start if he is to win again. If .he begins reasonably well he will keep them all busy. Karl, of whom there is some doubt about starting, is a brilliant galloper. He won well at Wanganui at the beginning of the season, and at Trentham he carried 7.11 and ran third to Dungarvan and Triune and fourth with 7.15 to Knockfin. That was good form and he has only to go to the post to command a big following. Mother Superior will be having her first race of the season, but, anywhere right, she would have to be considered.

Alchemic, though he is galloping well, will probably need a race, but Body line, who ran a great race into second place behind Farmer at Bulls with 8.7, nas drop ped suddenly to tL* minimum, and if Farmer is to bo considered, then the Awapuni representative’s prospects look exceedingly bright. He now meets Farmer on 81b better terms and iiis chances of adding to his winning account hero cannot bo denied. Mata Hari, who makes up the octette, has been racing solidly this season, running second with 8.8 at the Wnipawa meeting, second with 8.5 at Poverty Bay, and beating Legatee with the same weight the second day. She was, however, beaten into fourth place at Hastings behind Lavina. Form horses engaged in this race are: Farmer, Bodyline, and Oratory. THE WELTER HORSES. One of the best fields of the day is that carded for the Kiwitea Handicap, which is a 7.11 minimum. A “baker’s dozen” paid up for the event and backers will have plenty of form to consider. Lowenberg, who ran a nice race at Waverley, has trained on well since and looks like being a good horse this season. He will be more forward than Litnbohm, and Davistock did not show up to advantage in the Waverley Cup; but Jubiiee Song has run some fair races this season and usually races well on this course. Chief Ranger, who developed good form last autumn, is sure to have benefited from his few races in Australia this season, and it is unlikely he will be produced unless trainer L. Morris is satisfied ho is in good fettle. Full Throttle performed below expectations at Levin, but that was not his true form and his good work since leaves the impression that ho will make amends at an early dato. Lord Moutoa’s form this season has been consistently good and if he is decently drawn at the barrier he will play n prominent part in this event. He has plenty of paco and sticks on really well. Gold Mission was carried off the course at Levin and was not knocked about alter losing her position. She favours the sting out of the going and may get a track to suit her.

Hunting Lodge is always liable to effect a surprise and this is her pet distance. The locally-trained Sanguine King, though he races well when fresh, may require an outing to thoroughly attune him. Supreme Court appeals more than Darecourt, but the pick of tho trio on the minimum maybe Blue Garter, who has won at both starts this season. Blue Garter is an hon.est mare and a solid race can confidently bo expected from her. When backers are called upon to make their final decisions it will not surprise if fheir deliberations are between Chief Ranger, Lord Moutoa, Full Throttle, and Lowenberg.
