Lord Galway paid his, first official visit to Ashburton yesterday and was accorded a civic welcome on behalf of the borough and county. .His Excellency then went to Longbeach as the guest of Mr J. H. Grigg. He visited Timaru to-day. Constable W. A. Calwell, of Coalgate, Canterbury, has been appointed senior . constable. at Otaki in place of Constable Satherley, who lips retired. Constable Calwell is expected to arrive next week. Dr. W. R. Stowe, of Palmerston North, arrived by the Zealandic, which came by way of Cape Horn, writes a London correspondent. He is renewing professional associations in London while the ship is in'port. The Zealandic will be going to Hamburg, and Dr. Stowe is hoping to be able to make contact with his son, Mr A. K. Stowe, who is a teacher of English ait an education institute in Czechoslovakia. Another son, Dr. W. R. G. Stowe, is at the London County Council Hospital at Fulham.
