EDUCATION BOARD.

WANGANUI DISTRICT. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held on Thursday, Mr E..F. Hemingway presiding. Also present were Colonel J. H. Whyte and Messrs M.’H. Oram, J. Iv. Hornblow, J. W. Batchelar, IV. T. Benefield, P. Munro and R. Dukeson. The chairman reported' on visits paid to schools in the northern portion of the board’s area, expressing pleasure at the work of the committees. The architect (Mr E. R.. Hodge) reported that the painting of the school buildings at Terrace End and the new buildings at Tangimoana had been completed. Arrangements had been made for the occupation of the latter school. During the ensuing month it was proposed to carry out repairs or re-roof the main building at the Hokowliitu School. > Stating that the grounds were in splendid order and that the present school had been in use for 60 years, the committee -cf the AVliakarongo School wrote asking in what position the school stood on the board’s rebuilding list. It was decided to advise the committee that the matter was under consideration, but no decision had been arrived at in view of the fact that the question of consolidation was involved. In reply to a question from Mr Hornblow, the secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) said that when in Wellington recently he had made enquiries regarding the erection of a new. school at Oroua Downs to replace the structure which had been destroyed by fire. He had been informed that the matter was still under consideration. M r Hornblow commented that the present arrangements were very expensive for the-Education Department. Tt was deckled to write to the department stressing the necessity for an early start with the erection of a new school building. “This committee has done some very good work,” commented Mr Hemingway, when an application was received from- the committee of the Russell Street School for a subsidy toward the cost of drain pipes. The request was granted. The resignation of the janitor of the Palmerston North manual training centre was received, the matter of appointing a successor being left in the hands of the secretary and the chairman. The hoard granted the committee of the Manchester Street School, Feilding, permission to allow the school buildings to he used for a Bible class camp at Christmas. The usual conditions are to lie observed. “The school has sufficient accommodation and the required number of teachers for its grading.” said the senior inspector (Mr A. F. McMurtrie) when a letter was received from the committee of the Russell Street School asking that the question of the teaching staff should he reviewed. It was pointed out in the letter that - one teacher was handling a class _ of 63 pupils. The senior inspector said that the remedy lay in the hands of the headmaster, and that he would discuss the matter with the. committee. and. the headmaster on his next visit to Palmerston North.
