SAVING TO COUNTY.

CONTROL OF HIGHWAY. Per Press Association. ■ HASTINGS, Nov. 21. In Napier, on Thursday, Hon. It. Semple said the Hawke’s Bay County Council had saved £2OOO as a result of the board taking over the main highways, to which the chairman (Air Logan) said the saving would be £2UO at the most. . Mr Semple now supplies figures which show that the cost to the county for the year ended March, 1935, was £llß9 ; the following year £1022, and three months of the current year £346. ihe board proposed to reseat twelve miles in the next financial year, and if tins work had not been taken over by the hoard it would have cost the county well over £2OOO “In face of these figures, which are absolutely correct,” said Mr Semple, “the statement of the chairman that the saving would not he more than £2OO is absolutely absurd.” The dispute arose during a discussion on the county’s decision to suspend certain road work because of the extra costs imposed by the recent legislation.
