GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. FOR WATER SUPPLY SCHEME. Approval of a 20 per cent, subsidy in respect of the new water supply scheme, estimated to cost £112,144, and an intimation that tho subsidy would now he free of previously imposed conditions in respect of the Hawaii cut and Kawau diversion, were signified in a letter received by the Palmerston North City Council, last evening, from the Employment Division of the Department of Labour. “That is more satisfactory,” commented the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) on whose motion the letter was received and the department thanked for its action. Cr W. B. Tennent asked if the amount named allowed for increased costs due to higher wages and shorter hours.

The Mayor said that matter had been inquired into previously. It was decided to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise the loan and to give public notice of this intention.
