An astonishing case of a woman who lived ns a man for 40 years lias been revealed by the death of “Jack” Garland, aged 67, says a San Francisco report. Only half a dozen people knew the closely-guarded secret of this individual—well known
as a writer, soldier and charity worker. Garland cast off her sex in 1896, when she decided to pose as a man because it would give her greater freedom to help the needy. She served in the United States Army in the Philippines, and was decorated. Later she became a journalist, and in that capacity and as a social worker was well known under the pseudonym “Mr Jack B.
