NEW BUILDING.
CEREMONY AT WELLINGTON.

The ceremony of laying the foimuation stone of the Government Life Insurance building on the corner of Customhouse Quay and Bra.ndon Street was performed by the Gover-nor-General (Lord Galway) in the presence of a large gathering, including Ministers of the Crown, members of Parliament, heads of Government dep.'„tmente, representatives of life insu.anee companies and many prominent citizens. The building, which will te eight stories, will be an imposing a.nd handsome addition to the city’s architecture and will have frontages of 170 ft. to Customhouse Quay and 119 ft. to Panama and Brandon Streets. The structure, which was designed by the Government architect, Mr John T. Mair, will be highly earthquake and fire resisting. It will have a steel frame of a type new to New Zealand, being a modification of the form of construction used by the foremost Japanese authorities on earthquake resisting building design. It is intended to floodlight the upper portion of the building, and it therefore will be a striking landmark by night as well as day. *“ ...
