PURE MILK PLAN

CAMPAIGN AT NAPIER. TUBERCULIN TESTS BEGUN. HASTINGS, Oct. 3. A campaign aimed at ensuring a pure milk supply for Napier was inaugurated this week with the coming into force of the Napier Borough Council’s recent by-law, which requires the tuberculin testing of dairy herds from which Napier’s milk supply is drawn.

Eight herds are the maximum number which can be dealt with at one time, and the testing wil continue at the rate of eight every two days until the entire programme is completed. Of the 32 vendors supplying milk to customers in Napier, approximately 20 have registered in conformity with the requirements of the new milk by-laws. Samples of milk from cows in the herds receiving attention are taken bv the Borough Council inspector (Mr E. Grant) and are placed in an icebox until they are delivered for testing to Mr N. J. Ellison, bacteriologist at the Napier Hospital. This precaution is taken to ensure that the milk remains at a consistent temperaure, thus preventing an increase in bacteria.

Within four hours of the taking of samples, they are placed in the hands of the bacteriologist, who immediately commences the testing. Facilities are. being given to dairymen to arrange to be present while milk from their herds is being examined.
