ESCAPED PRISONER
APPEARANCE IN COURT.

John William Graves, aged 31. who escaped from the AVaikune prison camp on Sunday afternoon, surrendered at the Auckland police station last night He appeared this morning before Air F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court charged that, being an incorrigible rogue, he escaped from the prison camp before the expiration of the term for which lie was committed.
Sub-Inspector Fox, asking for a re mend till October 10, said that Graves walked into the police station at 11.30 p.m.
Air R. A. Si nger. who appeared for Graves, said he had offered himself to the Auckland Gaol last night, hut was refused admission as the place was closed.

Air Fox said the police had had no intimation that he had gone to the prison. All* Singer-: It shows his good intentions anyway. The remand was granted. AVhen an inquiry was made this afternoon it was denied officially that Graves was refused admission last night to the Auckland Prison. It was stated that the officer on duty at the gate was unable to admit the escapee without calling the officer who had charge of the keys. On returning to the gate he found that Graves had disappeared.
