PAHIATUA, Oct. 3. Tho Pahiatua County Council met today, Cr A. \V. Bisset presiding. A letter was received from Messrs Card and Lawson, asking tho council to reconsider tho' decision as regards metalling portion of tho Woodville-Aohanga Road leading on to the estate of the late Mr J. li. George. Tho chairman moved that a reply be sent that the couicil was not prepared to do any metalling out of revenue —Carried. Air A. H. Ahrens complained that a plantation on his property had recently been destroyed by iiro which, he presumed, had been lit by a county roadman. The trees were about four year a old and about 100 trees were burnt, said tho overseer, who added that a lire made by the roadman had become uncontrollable. Tho chairman moved that Mr Ahrens bo written to, explaining how tho accident had happened, and offering to replant tho trees destroyed.—Carried. Mr W. J. Skilton drew attention to tho condition of tuo council’s residence at Alangatainoka, pointing out that the dwelling was badly in need of repairs and painting. Tho necessary repairs arc to bo carried out. Tho main highways estimates for 1936-37 were forwarded in a circular letter from tho Public Works Department.—The clerk said that everything the council had applied for had been granted. The Public Works Department advised in regurd to the dispute over payment tor extra excavating work on tho Makuri Gorge undertaking by Messrs Stevenson and Sons, that there was no sup clause in tile contract, and that tile question of payment would largely depend on the instructions given by the overseer to the contractor. A further letter from the department stated that they considered no good cause would bo served by referring the matter to arbitration, and were prepared to allow payment on 7000 yards, costing £612 10s, provided the council paid over a lump sum of £7B of that amount. —Received. Tho chairman reported that an agreement had been made with Mrs Brechin regarding the stopbank work on the latter s property. Ur. \\ hitta asked why one firm had been allowed to auction all the county horses. It was explained that the particular agent had como along and had secured the business. Tho chairman spoke of the two men who had for so many years looked after the horses, and lie thought it would be fitting for a annul presentation to be given to them.—The matter was left in ttie chairman’s hands. In the course of Iris report the overseer (Air S. Macrae) made the following statements regarding main highways:—Wel-lington-Napier: 300 cubic yards of pit metal have been used for maintenance of shoulders. River protection work at War/en’s bridge is necessary, where the Miukakahi stream is threatening to cut into Warren’s creek. Pahiatua-Pongaroa: Slips have been removed and 300 cubic yards of metal have been spread where necessary. Alakuri-Alangatoro: Slips have been removed and a dangerous wash-out lias been filled. Two hundred cubic yards of metal have been utilised for patching, and all loose metal has been graded in. Pahiatua-Mangaone: Slips which 'had the road closed to traffio have been removed. Two hundred and fifty cubic yards of metal have been used for surface patching and all metal has been graded in. In regard to county roads, the report stated inter alia: —Railway - Baliance Gorge: Slips liavo been removed and bridge decks repaired. The surface has been patched and metal graded in. Man-gahao-Valley: The road has been graded and pot-linos filled. The reconstruction of Ness’s bridge has been commenced, as the old structure is in a very dangerout condition. Palmerston North Track: Heavy grading has been carried out and slips have been removed. WoodvilleAohanga : Several largo slips have been removed. Pot-holes hae been filled and shoulders graded, off. The annual meeting of the Pahiatua Lawn Tennis lub was held last evening, Mr W. Hall-Watson presiding. The report was adopted and the following officers elected: —Patron, Air P. R.lioagey; president, Air- Hall-Watson; vice-presi-dents, Aliss 11. Ross, Mrs Bisset, Mrs I. Al. Graham, Mr Bamford, Air E. Gregorie; secretary Aliss N. Irving; club captain, Air ’L. D. Lovelock; auditor, Mr K. Siddclis; management committee, the president, secretary, treasurer, club captain, and Alisses Junker and Raleigh, Messrs P. R. Boagey and Bamford; grounds committee, Messrs J. D. Thompson, 11. Gover, 11. Gardiner, and A. Donald. Air P. R. Boagey, who had contributed over (he past 2(1 years considerable valuable work in the interests of tho club, wa s unanimously elected a life member. Mr L. D. Lovelock was appointed delegate to the Alanawatu Lawn Tennis Association. The ladies’ social committee was elected as follows: Airs Goer, Airs Bisset, Airs Graham, Mrs Cleghorn, Airs Alacklcy, Airs Tattle, Airs M. A. Robertson, Airs Watson and Airs L. D. Lovelock, with power to add.
