WEATHER IN SEPTEMBER.

ABNORMAL RAINFALL. WELL ABOVE THE AVERAGE. In his notes on the weather experienced in September, Mr E. J. Werry, of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, states that the most outstanding features were, firstly, the abnormal rainfall and, secondly, the prevalence of westerly winds. Rain fell on 13 days for a total of 3.80 inches, over an inch above the average for September for the last 20 years. This increased rainiall, combined with the heavy falls at the end of August, made the ground much wetter and colder than is usual for September. Almost three inches of rain fell within a fortnight. Gardening has, in consequence, suffered a severe setback. Temperatures a.ll round were slightly higher than the corresponding temperatures in September fast year, hut were almost identical with the average temperatures for the last 20 years. There were only four frosts, of which two were very mild. A record frost of 10 degrees occurred early in the evening of the 7th but disappeared quickly oil the following morning. "Winds were stronger than usual, and mostly from the west. On 27 days out of the 30 the wind was from the westerly or north-westerly direction. Detailed records are:— RAINFALL.
