LENIENCY FOR SEAMEN.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. I. Several seamen this week have appeared before the Collector of Customs (Mr J. Mclntosh), who has power to deal summarily with cases of evasion of payment of duty. A party of seamenappeared this morning, having been met by three Customs officers when they came ashore by launch from a ship anchored in the stream. After a search the officers took possession ol several bottles of gin and whisky, silk stockings, cigarettes, cigars, dolls, and toys. The duty payable amounted to only a few shillings', but had the men been taken to Court they would have been liable to a fine of at least £2O. They gladly signed the confessions, paid the dutv and listened to a fatherly talk by Mr Mclntosh, who warned them that if they were caught again they would be taken to Court.
