PERSONAL.

Mr D. M. Sherwood, a chartered accountant, of London, who is spending a holiday of eight months in New Zealand in the course of a world tour, is a visitor to Palmerston North. He will be the guest of Dr and Mrs J. S. Monro, of Chaytor Street, until he leaves this centre on Monday. After his sojourn in New Zealand Mr Sherwood will spend a period in Australia.

Mr N. Lamont, who was assistant instructor in agriculture attached to the Palmerston North office of the Department of Agriculture, and who has been transferred to Masterton, has taken over the duties of Mr S. Freeman, who has been fields instructor of the department in the Wairarapa district. Mr Freeman was recently appointed organising supervisor of the young farmers’ club movement.

Professor W. Mohr, Director of the Department of Physics at the Dairy Research Institute attached to Kiel University, Germany, spent yesterday in Palmerston North inspecting Massey Agricultural College and farmlands adjacent to the city. He left this morning for Wellington and sails on October 2 for Australia. He will spend a short period in the Commonwealth before returning to Germany via the Suez Canal route.

At a meeting of the Manawatu and Oroua School Committees' Association, last evening, the chairman (Mr W. G. Black) extended a welcome to Mr J. W. Batchelar (Waituna West) and congratulated him on his recent election to the Wanganui Education Board. Mr Batchelar would not only prove a very useful member of the board, but would be of material assistance to the association in providing a permanent link in transmitting their wishes and opinions, said the speaker. Mr Batchelar. in the course of his reply, said he had no easy task in front of him in following Mr J. S. Tingey. Rev. Clyde Carr was selected at the annual meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association last nignt to represent the New Zealand branch at the centenary celebrations to be held in South Australia between December 22 and December 31 next. The invitation to send a delegate was received from the Premier of South Australia on behalf of the Government and the branch of the association in that State. All expenses, including fares, will be paid by the South Australian Government and the delegates will be the guests of the State during the visit. They will be officially entertained in other Australian States they may visit.
