(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Kept. 15. A large company ot children with bright smiles greeted Air U. L. Hunter, M.P., when he visited the local school to-day at. the invitation of the committee, and a suggestion from him that lessons should close an hour earlier to enable them to attend the Flower Show was, on asking for a show of hands, unanimously supported. Mr W. Amies (chairman) introduced Mr Hunter, who briefly addressed the scholars on tho importance of tho education they wero receiving which would fit them to tako' their place in the world. Ho said that the Government was desirous of extending the period of school attendance by ono year, and had under consideration a scheme to provide free transport to tho centres for secondary education. Drawing on experiences during his recent visit to Rarotonga, Mr Hunter related several amusing stories concerning the nativo children, and he/ spoke of the very great keenness dis-
played by them in their school work. The members of tho committee conducted Mr Hunter through the building, and on viewing the well furnished classrooms he. spoke a fow words of hearty commendation for the work of the past and present committees. A visit was then to the children’s playing area which owing to faulty drainage duo to tho prolonged wet weather was in a deploroble condition, and Mr Hunter promised to bring tho matter to the notico of tho Education Department, ae assistance to render Unsuitable to bo used is urgently needed. An inspection of tho former school site brought the visit to a C *Tho friends of Mr Bronlow Gould, of Rongotca, will regret to learn that he is an iinate of a private hospital in Palmerston North. ’
