CHARITY DANCE
The Manawatu Scottish Society conducted its fourth annual charity dance in the spacious De Luxe Hall, last evening, when there was a good assemblage of old-time dancers. The society has always been sensible to the cause of charity and luas been ever ready to do its part in assisting. The society and its Pipe Band are to be congratulated upon the excellent work performed by tneir members under the leadership of the chief, Mr J. S. Jenkinson. No stone was left unturned to minimise the cost of holding last night’s function, and about £25 will be handed over by the society. Prior to entering upon the programme the Pipe Band paraded round the Square playing lively airs. A pleasing exhibition of an international reel was given by Misses Dorothy McLean, Millicent MacDonald, Lucy Cronin and Master Claude Henderson. Piper Cruden played the accompaniment. Piper Scott played for the Highland reel which was danced by Misses Y. Nicholson, N. Cooper, N. Ford and M. McSweeney. Supper was taken in sittings. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford) were present, and Mrs I. Morgan and Mr A. Waterhouse, of Havelock North, were visitors.
The M.C.’s were Messrs G. Allan, F. J. Duckworth and H. Hughes. Mr Jenkinson, in conveying thanks to the patrons, stated that the contribution to charity would be distributed between the Willard Home, All Saints’ Home and the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Fund. Miss Nicholls and Mr Niclioll6 won the Monte Carlo waltz. The ladies in charge of the supper were Miss B. Kelly, who wore blue taffeta. with parchment lace; Mrs V. T. Nicholson, black crepe suede with flesh pink yoke; Mrs Duckworth, in midnight blue georgette embroidered with heads; Mrs Cronin, pink taffeta; Mrs W. Allen, black georgette with silver trimming. The committee headed by the chief, Mr Jenkinson. responsible for organising the function, comprised Messrs G. Allen, W. Allan, B. Howe. H. Hughes, F. J- Duckworth, Y. J. Nicholson and C. Cronin.
